오늘 배울 표현은 두 가지입니다.
 

1. shudder

to shake suddenly with very small movements because of a very unpleasant thought or feeling 아주 불쾌한 생각이나 느낌때문에 갑자기 몸이 떨리는 행동을 가리킵니다.직접적인 한국어로 번역하자면 '(공포나 추위때문에) 몸서리치다, 떨다' 정도가 되겠네요.

• He couldn't help but shudder when he walked past the old, abandoned house.
• 그는 오래된 폐가 앞을 지날 때 저절로 몸을 떨 수밖에 없었다.
• I shudder to think what might have happened if we hadn't left on time.

• The thought of speaking in front of a large audience made him shudder with nervousness.

2. peck 

peck은 기본 뜻과 함께 파생된 두 가지 뜻이 있는데요
 
1) When a bird pecks, it bites, hits, or picks up something small with its beak.
기본적으로 새가 부리로 '쪼다'의 의미가 있습니다.

 
2) to give someone a quick kiss, especially on the side of the face
얼굴에 쪽 하고 짧게 뽀뽀하는 행동을 가리킵니다.
새가 부리로 짧게 쪼는 모양을 떠올린다면 쉽게 이해되는 의미입니다.
 
3) to type on a keyboard, pressing the keys using only one or two fingers, especially 
   because you are not very good at typing
우리나라말로 흔히 '독수리타법'을 가리키는 말에도 동사 peck을 사용합니다.
이 역시 새가 쪼는 모양을 떠올리면 쉽게 이해되는 의미입니다.

• He gave his friend a quick peck on the forehead as a goodbye gesture.
  그는 작별 인사로 친구의 이마에 가볍게 입맞춤을 했다.
• After their date, he pecked her lightly on the lips and said goodnight.
  데이트가 끝난 후, 그는 그녀의 입술에 가볍게 키스를 하고 인사를 나눴다.
• He pecked at the keyboard with two fingers, slowly typing out each word.
  그는 두 손가락으로 키보드를 하나씩 눌러가며 천천히 타이핑했다.
• Instead of typing quickly, she pecked at the keys, searching for each letter.
  그녀는 빠르게 타이핑하는 대신, 하나씩 글자를 찾으며 키를 눌렀다.
• Watching him peck away at the keyboard reminded me of when I first learned to type.
  그가 키보드를 두드리는 모습을 보니 내가 처음 타이핑을 배웠던 때가 떠올랐다.
