Remember the lesson from Sunday School that goes,
'Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth'?

It says, 'Blessed are the meek,' for the meek shall learn.
And if you learn, you shall inherit the abundance of life
that God or nature has placed in front of you.
You boys are arrogant, conceited, cocky, and ignorant - not meek.

 

■ conceited

too proud of yourself and your actions

자신과 행동에 너무 자만심이 차 있는 사람을 가리킵니다.

원형인 conceit 가 명사로 자만심을 의미합니다.

주로 자신이 뛰어나다고 생각해서 은연중에 남을 무시하거나 가볍게 여기는 태도를 보일 때 사용합니다.

 

 

■ cocky

confident in an annoying way

자신감이 넘쳐서 주변을 짜증나게 하는 사람을 가리킵니다.

사실상 conceited 와 의미상 큰 차이가 없죠.

conceied가 내적인 자만심에 가깝다면

cocky는 자만심이 밖으로 뻗어나와 경솔하고 가볍게 행동하는 경우를 가리킵니다.

그 문장은 온유한 자가 복이 있나니 온유한 자는 배우게 될 것이다. 라고 되어 있어.

그리고 너희들이 배운다면 신과 자연이 너희 앞에 둔 삶의 풍부함을 물려 받게 될거야.

너희들은 거만하고 자만하며 경솔하고 무지해, 온유하지 않지.

이 문장이 흥미로워서 몇 가지 더 찾아봤습니다.

일단 이 구절은 성경 신약 마태복음 5장 5절에 나오는 말씀입니다.

 

그리고 해석에서 "온유한 자가 복이 있나니 그들이 땅을 기업으로 받을 것이라"

당연히 기업은 우리가 평소에 쓰는 회사의 의미가 아닙니다.

기업 (基業) 이라는 한자를 써서 업의 기초나 토대가 되는 자산의 의미입니다.

즉 유산이라는 의미에 가깝습니다.

이 문장에서는 온유한 자는 땅을 물려 받게 될 것이다 라는 의미입니다.

 

마지막으로 the meek, 온유한 자에 대해서 찾아보았는데요.

성경에서 말하는 온유한 자란 겸손하고 유순하며

다른 사람의 관계에서 온화하고 참을성 있는 사람들을 말한다고 합니다.

상대방의 말을 잘 듣고 겸손하게 행동하는 사람들을 말합니다.

 

온유한 사람이 되어야 겠네요.
